When we characterise, we try to bring the characters of a story to life - to make them seem alive and believable.



Here are some of the key features in Characterisation:


Appearance
How will you describe the character? Will the reader get a picture in their mind?

Name
Is the character's name memorable?
Have you used an interesting, different name?
Would a nickname be appropriate?


Attitude
How does the character react toward events?
How does he feel about people and circumstances?



Dialogue
What does your character say in the story?
How does he speak? With a stutter? A mumble? Rudely? Positive/negative?


Thoughts
What does the character think about?
What does he say to himself?



Reactions of others
How do other characters feel about a character?
How do they treat him?


Actions/Incidents
What does the character do?
Does he create problems? Does he solve them? How?


Setting/Physical Objects
How does the setting impact on the character?
What objects could you associate with your character? Why?
